Rules for submissions

May 30, 2010 Pre-Meeting 8 Comments Posted by Caroline

There are always pesky rules. Without wanting to hamper your creativity, below are the ones that we insist on.

General

  1. We can only accept text and/or graphics for publication in the magazine itself. Remember: the magazine will be printed and that fact imposes certain limitations on what we can accept. We will publish an extended version of the magazine on LinchpinMagazine.com – we would love to receive well put together and edited video content to include in the extended version.
  2. You can submit as many entries as you want.
  3. Remember the topic: this is Linchpin Magazine and its all about the Linchpin Meetups on June 14th. Inspirations, experiences, ideas, things you learned – please share!
  4. Please include you name, city, job title, website or other contact details and, if you want, a portrait (300×300 pixels at 300dpi or larger) so that we can credit your contribution.
  5. Only submit items that you have created.
  6. While you own the copyright of your own, individual pieces, the copyright of the magazine as printed belongs to the editorial team.
  7. We only have so many pages and might have to make a selection of which material we include. We will be looking for material that’s original and insightful and that we think will be of most benefit to the tribe. It’s painful, but necessary. Luckily, LinchpinMagazine.com doesn’t have such restrictions so we’ll add items that didn’t make it into print here, providing they are sufficient quality.

Text

  1. Please keep written pieces down to below 750 words. An ideal piece is around 250 words or shorter. The shorter your contribution, the more of them we can include. The format is open: we would love to receive poems, slogans, one-liners and articles equally. We’re looking for remarkable, creative contributions.
  2. Text may not retain formatting. We’ll try (but can’t promise) to keep bold, italics and underlines but fonts and sizes may have to conform to the norm during the layout process.

Graphics

  1. Only submit images that you have originated (that is, images you have taken or drawn, painted or otherwise created).
  2. Please send images as high-resolution JPGs – minimum printing quality is 300dpi. Higher is better. We want you to shine, not pixelate.
  3. We might have to shrink images but will contact you if we want to crop or otherwise edit them. We’re not planning on doing any image manipulation, but what we need to do depends on what we get.

To submit your entries, email them to shipped@linchpinmagazine.com. This email will email address will be closed at Midnight, PST (Pacific Standard time) on Wednesday June 16th. This is 7am GMT.

  1. [...] detailed instructions shortly about how to submit your contributions. In the meantime – check out our rules for contributors. If you haven’t already joined the mailing list do so now, it’s the best way to stay [...]

Observation : as some of us know how powerful words can be when combined a certain way. Using those two, “rules” & “submission” to start a dialog with the people that were described in the book as the ones that start their day by not following the “rules” and by not “submitting” might not get the full attention you are seeking. Or maybe, just maybe, we’re not the linchpins you’re looking for. Please just tell me you’re now seeing the paradox in that and I’m not just out there where I think I am.

    Anyways, jokes aside, great idea!

The paradox is clear and shining! Personally, I find it amusing. The other possible titles I had thought of would have made this article less easy to find and understand. Saying that, “Give us what you’ve got (within reason)” works quite well. I’m open to other suggestions. No rules.

    Rules???

  5. [...] you submit, please make sure you’ve read these pesky rules to make sure everything goes [...]

As a regular content creator who works as both staff and freelance for a large number of publications, I would love to see a wish list. What would you like to see? A best case “this is how success looks to me” explanation of content would goa long way in creating an efficient content flow.

Otherwise I am sending you a pic of a flower.

    People are sorta like flowers.

    Smiles

  7. Caroline says:

Thank you for the question, David, and for phrasing it in a way that gave me a big laugh.

Ideally, our lovely contributors will send us:
    * Full name, title, contact details, and a good-quality headshot, as well as any of the following:

    * Really good, high-resolution images with short captions, showing people getting together on the day.

    * High-resolution scans of artwork created for or at the event: business plans on a napkin, business cards on sticky notes, drawings of fellow linchpins or that sort of thing. Fun, visually interesting and creative artefacts, in short.

    * Short (100-250 words) pieces on something that they learned that day, a special encounter or other personal reflections. One or two pertinent points made well.

    * Shorter (1-100 words) pieces on what they felt at the event: poems, scribbles, slogans, resolutions, inspirations. Short but very personal expressions of what they experienced.

    * Long (500 word) articles about the event they went to, with a couple of interesting, relevant, high-resolution images. This would be a well considered and researched piece of writing, possible focussing on one interaction or conclusion, or portraying the event as it unfolded on the day.

Ideally, everything we get will be interesting, beautiful and focused on the Linchpin Meetups on June 14th. That will make our job of producing an interesting and beautiful magazine about interesting and beautiful (of heart and mind) people who are generous enough to go out there and share something about themselves so much easier. The success of this project (just like the success of the Linchpin Meetups) hinges not just on all our individual ability to ship but also the contributors’ generosity in giving of their time, attention and effort.

I hope that helps more than it hinders. Go forth and produce content! (But please, David, can I also have a picture of a flower? Because people really are sorta like flowers.)

    Respect,

    Caroline

    Hi,

Just noticed there’s a typo in the e-mail address on this page. “linchinmagazine” doesn’t sound too pleasant! Anyway thought I’d best give you the heads up so submissions go to the right address.

    Cheers,
    Arthur
